Light is a wonderful sight after the years of darkness.

Trying my hand at painter for a bit. Defiantly a lot of fun… AND a lot of robots, amiright?

Disney Channel Original

disneylogoLast night Robyn and I watched Escape to Witch Mountain (The Disney Chanel Original version) on ten parts (yes, ten!) on YouTube (what we will do for a taste of childhood). Robyn had been trying to track down that movie for so long so she was super excited that we found it. It got us talking about all those 90′s Disney straight to TV movies we thought were so cool when we were kids. So now we’re trying to track them down and ruin our childhood memories by watching them all as adults.

Here’s what we got so far:

  • Suzie Q (I just remember she dies and becomes a ghost or something)
  • Brink (Skating movie I remember)
  • Escape to Witch Mountain
  • Mermaid boy movie The Thirteenth Year (I don’t know what it’s called but I know a boy turns into a merman and is on the swim team) EDIT: I FOUND IT!
  • Halloween Town (Someone said they’re still making these?)
  • Don’t Look Under the Bed (I think is what it’s called, the one where the imaginary friend turns into the boogie man; scared the crap out of me when I was a kid btw)
  • Witches? (per nick) (he says a boy turns into a rat is all he remembers, I still don’t think it really exists)

UPDATE: I found this. I still want to hear everyone’s awesome memories.

Undiscovered

I LOVE UFO documentaries. Not only that; anything involving extra terrestrials, roswell, bigfoot, etc. I will gobble up. Now I certainly don’t believe that bigfoot exists or that it’s even probably that we’ve been visited by another intelligent life (although their existence IS very probable), but I sure would like to believe. I think we live in a world that is considered ‘discovered.’ Breakthroughs are generally incremental and life here on earth has seemingly become a monotonous grind. I think there’s people out there (like myself) that wish there were still secrets and discoveries to be had. There’s something special about that feeling that I can’t exactly articulate. Maybe it humbles us and forces us to step back.

Who knows.

Blizzcon: Thoughts on Cataclysm

wow-cataclysm

I was able to catch most of Blizzcon via live internet stream this year. My first reaction was how fun it looks to attend something like Blizzcon; maybe I’ll go next year.

I’d also like to get out of the way that I CANNOT wait for Diablo 3 and SC2. The SC2 custom maps initiative is so much more comprehensive than I ever imagined and revived memories of creating my own Neverwinter nights dungeons. I’ve always been interested in creating a simple video game, but never wanted to really take the time to learn an engine. I’m not sure how I feel about taking a creation of mine and partially signing over the rights to Blizzard, but we’ll see how I feel about it as the release approaches.

<BEGIN WOW TALK>

Now onto Cataclysm. One fundamental problem I’ve always had with WOW expansions their need to grow the world. Many players may not share that same feeling, which I understand (after all, doing the same thing all the time DOES get boring). However, the Outlands is currently desolate (besides the few DKs still roaming around) and the old world is even worse. If Cataclysm were to be released in the normal order of things it would leave Outlands, Northrend AND the old world completely barren. Instead what they’ve decided to do is revive the old world and breathe some life into it. This was desperately needed and really gives me a good gut feeling about the direction the expansion is heading. I would love to see more motivation to move about the already huge world in existence rather then just creating more and more content, in turn making the prior content obsolete. (This HAS to feel good for the developers who spend countless years of their life slaving over the old world as well) More end game content and a level cap of 85 reinforces the fact that we are on the same page. They are, in fact, creating entirely new content for the grind to 85 but at least this is a start. More levels and meaningless content does not a good game make. The experiences, challenges and connections are why we stick around.

This brings me to guild changes. Being in AIE (a guild of over 2k members), I’m not sure how significant the guild changes will be but I do like the initiative put forth to create a foundation for a meaningful community. Lets be honest, that’s why 99% of us play WOW anyway.

Overall I have a really good feeling about this expansion and it seems as though everyone keeping up with the news seemingly shares my instinct.

Found something super old I recorded a long time ago. I couldn’t get the stupid buzzing off but I really don’t know what I’m doing with audio anyway.
I sometimes crave playing piano, guitar, etc. Maybe when we get settled down a bit I can work on that.

District 9

(Spoiler free)

Last night Nick, Robyn and I ventured to the theatre (where they had vending machines with bottles of watter going for $4.25!) to check out District 9. The few previews I had seen for this really peaked my interest, but within the first few minutes of the film I found myself emersed in the unexpected. The film is extremely unique and with a budget of $30 mil I’m pretty sure they’re already in the positives. This role was the lead actor’s (Sharlto Copley) first big motion picture and he absolutely sealed the deal for me with a performance you won’t see out of most actors in a lifetime. The film goes much deeper than I was expecting and had me at tears (no joke) more times than one. It really is an emotional and thrilling film that I would absolutely recommend to anyone.

I’m always a fan of alien lore so I normally feel biased with these types of movies but there are definatly themes throughout the film that pertain to our very real situation here on earth and probably the human condition in general.

On the way home Robyn and I were talking about how we see time and time again success coorilating diretly with a great story in ANY form of entertainment (Can you say Bioshock?). Throw 300 million dollars at a movie and it will still suck if the story isn’t there, whehter that’s concept or deliver. District 9 excedes expectations on both levels.

All I really have to say is brace yourself and go see it.

Looking

Sometimes you don’t know you’re looking for something until it’s all said and done. Only once you realize you haven’t found it do you learn that you were looking for anything at all.

This happened to me tonight…

I was looking for Q-Tips… We are out.
